A group of fifty countries supports the plan to protect 30% of both land and sea to halt biodiversity loss as a result of the One Planet Summit that took place on 11 January. The plan is made in preparation of the CoP 15 taking place this fall in Kunming, China. At the CoP nature targets will be agreed upon for the next ten years.

These fifty countries together form the High Ambition Coalition for nature and people, and is an initiative of France, Costa Rica and the United Kingdom. The Coalition wants to reach an agreement in Kunming to protect 30% of nature on the planet by 2030 similar to the agreement that was reached on climate in Paris in 2015.

Great Green Wall
In a morning session prior to the Summit, countries discussed how to finance the Great Green Wall project. This initiative aims to halt desertification in the Sahel by creating wall of trees of 7000 kilometres in length from the Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf of Aden.
