In the light of the Dutch King’s day (27-04), the birthday of the Dutch King Willem-Alexander, our individual member Roelof Heringa has been accepted in the Order of Orange-Nassau. Roelof was under the impression he was going to a meeting about the organisation of the Dutch Memorial Day (04-05) in his municipality, but to his surprise he received a decoration. On behalf of the whole Eurosite network we would like to congratulate Roelof and thank him for his work! Please find the official press release below:

Mr R.B. (Roelof) Heringa (69) from Lochem – Member of the Order of Oranje-Nassau.

Until his retirement in 2012, Mr Heringa worked as a project manager at the Forestry Commission of the Netherlands. He has been a volunteer in church life since the 1990s. He was among others Scriba at the Protestant Congregation of Lochem, deliverer of the church magazine, editor of the holiday brochure, coordinator of the opening of the Gudula Church and the annual icon exhibition. As of 2011, Roelof Heringa strengthened the working group ‘Celebrations’ of the Council of Churches of Lochem-Barchem as co-organiser of ecumenical celebrations. In November 2012 he became secretary of this Council, where he is strongly involved in researching how church communities can help with issues that affect society. Thanks to his contacts, there is good cooperation with the Apostolic Society and the Turkish Mosque.

Roelof Heringa also has a “green heart”. Since 2010 he has been in charge of the Garden Maintenance working group at the community of faith St. Joseph in Lochem, became a volunteer at the IVN in 2011, the North-Central Achterhoek department, and organizes activities at the Nature Garden in Lochem.

As of 2010 Roelof is a volunteer at the international network Migratory Birds for People.

In addition, from 2007 to 2016 he was secretary of the Association of Protected Cityscape “Berkeloord“ in Lochem. The association supports the preservation of the protection of Berkeloord and stands up for the interests of owners and residents.

From 2012 to 2015 he was a volunteer at Eurosite, which strives for a Europe where nature is protected by everyone.
