Every day, thousands of Europeans invest time, energy and knowledge in protecting nature. The European Commission is recognizing these achievements through the Natura 2000 Awards for outstanding services in management and conservation of the EU’s network of protected areas.
Twenty-four finalists have now been selected from the 83 applications. They include projects from Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Germany, Estonia, Greece, Spain, Finland, France, Hungary, Croatia, Italy, Latvia, Romania, and the UK.
We are pleased to announce that Eurosite members Aten and WWF Oasi are among the finalists with their projects “The French Natura 2000 platform: effective support for Natura 2000 professionals” and
“Terre dell’Oasi: supporting sustainable farming on Natura 2000 sites.” Other members that our involved in the selected projects are Natuurpunt (“Connecting the Sonian Forest and its Stakeholders near Brussels”) and Metsähallitus (“Europe’s rarest waterbird benefits from a team effort in conservation”).
An independent jury will now assess the finalists. Citizens can now also vote for their favourite shortlisted initiative to win the European Citizens’ Award. You can cast your vote on the dedicated website until 8 May 2016.
The winners will be announced at a ceremony hosted by Commissioner Vella in Brussels on Monday 23 May 2016. The event is open to the press and the public. The deadline for registering online is 8 May 2016.
