  • CAP – Fit for the Future of Farming?

    Screen Shot 2017-11-09 at 16.22.47

“There’s no such thing as a free lunch” is an old saying. And it really does apply to the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), which currently makes up the largest part, almost 40%, of the EU budget. Post Brexit we can expect significant cuts to the EU’s financial framework – with the CAP inevitably coming under heavy pressure to justify itself. A week before the European Commission is expected to come out with first proposals for the future CAP, we ask the questions: Does the CAP still deliver on its own goals? Is the CAP an efficient investment by taxpayers, what are its real costs and benefits? Does it support the global sustainability goals (SDGs), proudly signed by European leaders?

At this workshop you will get answers to these questions from the final results of an unprecedented “Fitness Check” of the CAP, carried out by a respected team of experts in agro-economy, ecology and sociology following the European Commission’s own “better regulation” methodology.

Furthermore, looking into the future, we will get the latest insights on the upcoming process of the CAP reform and what influence we have to expect from Brexit by Prof. Alan Matthews. The event will also include the first Brussels’ presentation of a German study on the economics of ecosystem services and biodiversity in rural areas, funded by the German Federal Environment Ministry. Afterwards there will be a panel-discussion with experts, policy makers and stakeholders.

This workshop is part of a project of NABU (BirdLife Partner in Germany) funded by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB). Please find more information here.
