  • Crop wild relative conservation – adding value to the Natura 2000 network

    Spring_Clive_Hurford

Join us for a webinar hosted by the European Commission to hear how the Natura 2000 network can provide a priceless contribution to food security and sustainable agriculture on 3 December from 14:30 – 16:00 CET.

Research undertaken in the Farmer’s Pride project reveals that a significant number of crop wild relative species occur within the Natura 2000 network. These species provide vital diversity for adapting and improving our crops – particularly in the race to combat the adverse impacts of climate change on agricultural production systems – therefore, conserving them in the Natura 2000 network offers a novel opportunity to add significant value to the sites.

Nigel Maxted, Shelagh Kell (University of Birmingham) and José Iriondo (Universidad Rey Juan Carlos) will explain the value of crop wild relatives in a European and global context, outline which species are a priority for conservation action in Europe and why, and present what we know about where they are found in the Natura 2000 network. We aim to engage policymakers in international efforts to conserve these precious resources, and will highlight how this can be achieved in existing protected areas with minimal additional effort and investment, providing a priceless contribution to food security and sustainable agriculture.
