  • Impact of the CAP on grassland habitats in continental, pannonian and steppic regions

    bukk_optimised-for-site

CEEweb for Biodiversity and Bükk National Park Directorate are organising a thematic networking event of the Natura 2000 Biogeographical Process taking place on October 3-4 2017 in Eger, Hungary,.

The Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) affects Natura 2000 habitats and species, including those related to grasslands. In many countries in continental, pannonian and steppic biogeographical regions, the lack of good agriculture practices resulting in undergrazing and overgrazing has significant effects for the local biodiversity. The event brings together experts working on habitats impacted by agriculture, providing a platform for a discussion about the impact of the current CAP on Natura 2000 habitats. Participants will also be provided with possibilities to discuss national Rule Development Programmes and their relevant measures for Natura 2000; they will be able to exchange experiences on relevant habitats management and get the opportunity to visit the local best practice sites. This seminar will advocate for a better management of agriculture related habitats and for creating a more sustainable agriculture policy.

    Draft agenda:

3 October 2017, 9 AM – 8 PM: CAP in general and CAP from the Natura 2000 perspective; state of play in the countries represented at the event with a specific focus on grassland management and grazing system; case studies from the region

4 October 2017, 9 AM – 7 PM: field trip with presentations; working groups and setting up a roadmap on follow-up actions.

The following major issues are suggested for the further discussion:

    • Role of grazing in managing Natura 2000 habitats
    • The agricultural policy’s role in sustainable grazing
    • Case studies from participating countries on grazing and agriculture practices from the region

Final agenda and more detailed information about the event is available here.

    Registration is now open here.

If you would like to present a case study from your country please email Monika Kotulak at kotulak@ceeweb.org.
