    Background

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) has responsibilities as a communicator, decision maker, leader, manager and executor. The communicator role can involve the organisation’s management and employees as well as the outside world; the decision-making role involves high-level decisions about policy and strategy. As a leader, the CEO finds solutions that work and drives change within the organisation. As a manager, the CEO presides over the organisation’s day-to-day, month-to-month, and year-to-year operations. In other words: the CEO is the key adaptation manager! To effectively implement adaptive management, it is required that the organisation has access to adaptive management planning strategies and tools.

This workshop aims to raise awareness about issues involved in developing and implementing an adaptive management approach at different levels: in doing so, we aim to enable more organisations to become aware of adaptive management as an approach, why (in particular) climate change and invasive species require increasingly adaptive management, increase knowledge about tools that are available, and the integral role of monitoring to the adaptive management process.

In 2012, there is a unique and valuable opportunity to learn from the operational implementation of a strategic decision taken by three leading Dutch nature conservation organisations to collaborate together and use the same adaptive management planning software system: in their case, the system chosen is CMSi (Conservation Management System International). This is a significant development, which will have implications for management planning across the majority of Natura 2000 sites in the Netherlands, which will be of real interest to others.

Working with members and partners, our aim is to ensure that the views of nature conservation organisations working in protected areas, including Natura 2000 sites, have opportunities to input. We will also introduce a 3-day Eurosite workshop on Natura 2000 Monitoring being co-organised and generously hosted by Eurosite and EUROPARC member, the Countryside Council for Wales (UK, 12 to 14 March 2013).

The overriding purpose of this workshop is to have a participative discussion. Join us to share your ideas and experience about practical management at grass-roots level! As an output from this workshop you are invited to co-create a set of priorities required on different levels to foster an adaptive management approach.

    Leader: Neil McIntosh, Eurosite nmcintosh@archive.eurosite.org

    Objectives:

    1. Provide Eurosite & EUROPARC members with insights to adaptive management as an approach and tools being used
    2. Discuss the critical role of monitoring as an integral part of the adaptive management process
    3. Share good practice and experience between different protected areas, including Natura 2000 sites
    4. Jointly set priorities to foster an adaptive management approach.
