  • Eurosite Webinar: Drone potential for vegetation monitoring

We are happy to inform you of an upcoming webinar series on remote sensing in natural site management. The series – 3 webinars in total – will be kicked off with a first webinar titled “Drone potential for vegetation monitoring: a case study of the tundra in the Krkonoše mountains” on Thursday 04 June from 11:00 – 12:00.

The webinars include short workshops and offer interactive contact with experts. The series is prepared in cooperation with the Eurosite Remote Sensing Support Group. The intention is to build the bridges between remote sensing experts, conservationists, and stakeholders involved in biodiversity conservation to strengthen our common, Pan-European efforts. The better use of science in nature conservation is an important challenge to tackle in European nature conservation. Eurosite aims to contribute in overcoming that challenge by organising this webinar series in which experts provide guidance and information.

The first webinar focuses on the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in vegetation mapping. This quickly developing technique enables the decrease of costs of field work, and increases its accuracy accordingly. The drones and their software are nowadays quite user-friendly, even for beginners. The drone results mappings are developed in close cooperation with botanists, validating the results on the ground – and can therefore be a powerful tool in monitoring and management planning. In this first webinar, our optical remote sensing data expert Lucie Kupková provides a unique opportunity to fly over subalpine and alpine vegetation in Krkonoše Mountains.
