World Migratory Bird Day 2014

The theme of this year’s World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD), which will take place on 10-11 May, is ‘Destination Flyways: Migratory Birds and Tourism’. This theme aims to highlight the important role the one-billon strong tourism industry can play in migratory bird conservation and the creation of green jobs for local communities. The theme will also highlight the Destination Flyways project, which WMBD is implementing in partnership with the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO). Project Flyway aims to promote sustainable tourism in key locations along the world’s migratory bird routes and channel revenue back into the conversation of important breeding, feeding and overwintering sites.

World Migratory Bird Day has been held annually on the second weekend in May since 2006. Every year, a range of events are organised by individuals and organisations around the world, including concerts, photography competitions, bird watching events, field trips and more. These events are intended to celebrate migratory birds, promote awareness of the need for conservation and motivate people and organisations to protect and conserve migratory birds around the world.
